Understanding GLP-1 for Weight Loss

GLP-1 stands for Glucagon-like peptide-1, a crucial component in how your body regulates blood sugar levels. GLP-1 medications work by enhancing insulin secretion from your pancreas, which helps drive sugar into cells and lower blood sugar levels. These medications were initially developed to treat diabetes, but researchers discovered they also produce dramatic weight loss results.

GLP-1 medications cause your body to decrease its natural production of glucagon. This creates two powerful effects that work together to help you lose weight. First, it slows gastric emptying, meaning your stomach processes food more slowly and you feel full longer. Second, it acts directly on your brain to decrease appetite. Together, these mechanisms help you naturally eat less without the constant struggle against hunger, leading to sustainable weight loss over time.

Benefits of Our Weight Loss Treatment

Medically Supervised Approach to Sustainable Results

You’ll receive comprehensive care from board-certified physicians who understand the science behind weight loss and how to optimize your results safely. Unlike quick-fix solutions or unsupervised programs, our medical oversight ensures your treatment is properly dosed and monitored throughout your program. We perform extensive laboratory panels before starting treatment and review every result with you personally, so you understand exactly how the medication affects your body and what adjustments might enhance your progress.

Reduced Appetite and Prolonged Fullness

GLP-1 medications work with your body’s natural hunger signals rather than fighting against them. You’ll notice a significant decrease in appetite and food cravings, making it easier to stick with healthier eating patterns. The slowed gastric emptying means you feel satisfied longer after meals, eliminating the constant battle with hunger that derails many weight loss efforts. This natual appetite suppression allows you to focus on nourishing your body without obsessing over every meal.

Personalized Treatment Plans Tailored to Your Needs

We reject cookie-cutter protocols in favor of truly individualized care. During your consultation with Dr. Yablonicky, we’ll review your complete health picture, including lab work, body composition, and personal goals. Some patients benefit most from GLP-1 therapy, while others achieve better results by optimizing thyroid levels, testosterone, or other endocrine hormones. We’ll determine the best approach for your unique situation and adjust your plan as you progress.

Comprehensive Support to Minimize Muscle Loss

One important consideration with GLP-1 medications is that they cause broad spectrum weight loss, meaning you’ll lose both fat and muscle. Since maintaining muscle mass is critical to long-term health and metabolism, we provide specific guidance on how to minimize muscle loss during treatment. This includes recommendations for protein intake, resistance training, and monitoring your body composition with our on-site DEXA scans to track changes in muscle mass versus fat loss throughout your program.

Convenient Weekly Dosing With Gradual Progression

Treatment begins with once-weekly subcutaneous injections at very low levels, allowing your body to adjust comfortably. We gradually increase your dosage over several weeks to months, minimizing side effects like nausea, diarrhea, and low blood sugar. After approximately three to four months, you’ll reach a weekly maintenance dose or can choose to discontinue therapy if you’ve achieved your goals. This gradual approach ensures you get maximum results with minimal discomfort.

Our Weight Loss Treatment Process

Comprehensive Evaluation With Lab Work and Body Composition Analysis

We begin by understanding what’s preventing you from reaching a healthy weight during your initial 60-minute appointment. Dr. Moreno and Dr. Yablonicky examine potential barriers like lifestyle factors that slow metabolism, insulin resistance, or suboptimal hormone levels that make weight loss difficult. Blood testing reveals how your thyroid, blood sugar regulation, and other systems currently function. A DEXA scan measures exactly where you’re carrying excess fat and how much muscle you have now, giving us concrete numbers to reference as your GLP-1 treatment progresses and your body composition shifts.

Personalized GLP-1 Dosing Strategy Based on Your Results

Dr. Moreno and Dr. Yablonicky review your complete lab panel and DEXA results to determine if GLP-1 therapy is your best path forward or if addressing other hormonal imbalances should come first. Some patients discover that optimizing thyroid levels or testosterone produces better weight loss outcomes than GLP-1 alone. Your customized treatment protocol includes precise dosing schedules that start conservatively and increase gradually based on your tolerance. We outline specific nutritional targets, protein requirements, and resistance training strategies designed to protect your muscle mass while the medication works to reduce your appetite and body fat.

Weekly Injections With Gradual Dose Increases

You’ll learn how to self-administer your weekly subcutaneous injections, which is simpler than most patients expect. We start at very low doses to minimize side effects and gradually increase according to your tolerance and response. Throughout the first several weeks, we monitor how you’re feeling and adjusting to the medication, making dosage changes as needed to optimize your results while keeping you comfortable.

Ongoing Support for Nutrition and Muscle Preservation

We provide ongoing guidance about nutrition, hydration, and exercise to support your weight loss and protect your muscle mass. You’ll receive specific protein intake targets and resistance training recommendations tailored to your fitness level. We encourage regular DEXA scans to track your body composition changes, ensuring you’re losing primarily fat rather than muscle while your GLP-1 therapy works to reduce appetite and promote sustainable weight loss.

Regular Monitoring and Plan Adjustments With Dr. Moreno or Dr. Yablonicky

Your weight loss success depends on consistent medical oversight throughout the entire treatment period. Dr. Moreno and Dr. Yablonicky track how your body responds week by week, watching for signs that your current dose needs adjustment or that side effects require intervention. These check-ins give you direct access to ask questions about what you’re experiencing. Around the four-month mark, we conduct a comprehensive assessment and discuss if you should continue therapy, reduce your dose, or transition to other strategies for maintaining your results.

Why Choose Us for Weight Loss Treatment

At MEDHERO, you’ll work with board-certified physicians who’ve spent over a decade mastering medical weight management. Dr. Yablonicky personally reviews every patient’s lab work and creates truly personalized treatment plans rather than following standard protocols that ignore individual differences. We combine cutting-edge medical technology like DEXA scanning with the personalized attention and accessibility that only a physician-led, locally-owned practice can provide. You’ll receive transparent guidance about what GLP-1 therapy can and cannot do for you, and we take time to explore if hormone optimization, thyroid adjustment, or other approaches might work better for your situation.

FAQs

What is GLP-1?

GLP-1 stands for Glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone your body naturally produces to regulate blood sugar and appetite. GLP-1 medications mimic this hormone by enhancing insulin secretion, slowing stomach emptying, and reducing appetite signals in your brain. These combined actions help you feel fuller longer and naturally eat less, leading to significant weight loss.

How to achieve weight loss quickly?

Medically supervised GLP-1 therapy provides fast and effective weight loss results in combination with proper nutrition and lifestyle modifications. Most patients notice decreased appetite within the first few weeks, with visible weight loss following shortly after. We start at low doses and gradually increase them over several months to ensure sustainable results.

Which GLP-1 is best for weight loss?

The best GLP-1 medication depends on your individual health profile, medical history, and how your body responds to treatment. During your consultation with Dr. Yablonicky, we’ll review your complete lab work and discuss which option aligns best with your goals. We monitor your progress closely and can adjust your medication or dosage to optimize results.

How does semaglutide work?

Semaglutide decreases your body’s natural production of glucagon, creating two powerful weight loss mechanisms. First, it slows gastric emptying so food stays in your stomach longer, making you feel full and satisfied after eating. Second, it acts on appetite centers in your brain to reduce hunger signals and cravings.

How does tirzepatide work?

Tirzepatide works similarly to semaglutide, but has added activity as a GIP agaonist(glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) enhancing fat metabolism and satiety, which often leads to more significant weight loss and better blood sugar control than GLP-1 alone. It does this with typically less side effects than semaglutide.

How does retatrutide work?

Retatrutide, or “GLP3,” is an experimental peptide that acts similarly to both of the available GLP1 drugs semaglutide and tirzepatide, but has a third activity on the hormone glucagon. In early trials this “triple-agonist” has shown the ability to induce even more significant weight loss and curbs appetite with greater muscle sparing than semalgutide or tirzepatide. Currently, it is only available through authorized, monitored clinical trials, and not for public use. Products marketed as retatrutide before approval are unregulated, often illegal, and can be unsafe. Dr. Moreno and Dr. Yablonicky can counsel you through these issues and monitor you should you decide to use a form of retatrutide before it is FDA approved.

Is GLP-1 safe?

GLP-1 medications are FDA-approved and extensively studied for safety under proper medical supervision. At MEDHERO, we require comprehensive lab work before starting treatment and monitor you closely to minimize side effects like nausea and low blood sugar. Dr. Yablonicky reviews your complete health profile to ensure GLP-1 therapy is appropriate for you.
